What Does the GSDF Do?

Our mission is simple: be ready when Georgia needs help.

The Georgia State Defense Force (GSDF) is an all-volunteer organization made up of Georgians who want to serve their state and community in a meaningful way. We support the Georgia National Guard and work alongside state and local agencies during emergencies and special operations. When disasters strike — hurricanes, severe storms, floods, or large-scale emergencies — the GSDF steps in to provide trained, reliable support.

What That Looks Like in Real Life

GSDF members take part in:

  • Disaster response and recovery, including logistics, planning, and coordination
  • Search and rescue operations, helping locate missing or endangered individuals
  • Emergency communications and operations support
  • Medical and community support missions
  • Drone operations, using unmanned aerial systems to assist with search and rescue, damage assessment, and situational awareness

We train regularly so our members are prepared to operate professionally in high-stress situations. Some members bring prior military or emergency-services experience, but no prior military service is required. Many of the skills we use come directly from everyday civilian careers — from tech and aviation to healthcare, logistics, and leadership.

Unlike the National Guard, the GSDF serves only within the state of Georgia. You won’t deploy overseas — your service stays local, supporting the communities you live in.

If you’re looking for a way to challenge yourself, learn new skills, and make a real difference close to home, the GSDF offers an opportunity to serve with purpose.

Serve your state. Support your community. Be ready when it matters.
