Georgia State Defense Force Soldiers Support McCaysville Flood Recovery

MCCAYSVILLE, Ga. — Georgia State Defense Force Soldiers deployed to McCaysville on Aug. 3 to assist local officials and residents as recovery efforts continued following devastating flash flooding that struck the North Georgia community overnight Aug. 1-2.

Responding to a request for military support, GSDF Soldiers were tasked with debris removal, water distribution and other recovery operations in and around downtown McCaysville. At the request of local authorities, Soldiers also conducted door-to-door visits in affected neighborhoods to check on residents, identify unmet needs and ensure they had access to available assistance.

The flooding followed intense rainfall that overwhelmed drainage systems, sending water and mud through downtown businesses, homes and public spaces. Local officials declared a state of emergency after floodwaters damaged public infrastructure, disrupted the city's water system and left streets coated in mud and debris. Recovery efforts continued throughout the week as local, state and volunteer organizations worked to restore the community.

Working alongside local emergency responders, public works personnel and community volunteers, GSDF Soldiers cleared debris from streets, sidewalks and private property, removed mud from flood-damaged homes and businesses, and distributed potable water to residents. Soldiers also assessed damage in affected areas, including sections of the Riverwalk where erosion and fallen trees demonstrated the force of the floodwaters.

 "When the Georgia Department of Defense calls for assistance the soldiers of the GSDF are ready to support Georgia's  communities," said Brig. Gen. Dennis Watts, Commander of the Georgia State Defense Force.  "We are proud to work alongside our state and local partners to help the citizens of McCaysville recover from this disaster." 

The deployment highlights the Georgia State Defense Force's role in supporting civil authorities during emergencies. As a volunteer component of the Georgia Department of Defense, the GSDF provides trained personnel to augment state and local agencies during disaster response, emergency management and other domestic support missions.

Although the floodwaters had largely receded before Soldiers arrived, the storm's impact remained evident throughout McCaysville. Mud-covered buildings, damaged infrastructure, debris fields and eroded riverbanks underscored the magnitude of the cleanup effort as recovery operations continued.

The Georgia State Defense Force remains prepared to support state and local agencies whenever called upon, providing trained volunteer Soldiers to assist Georgia communities during natural disasters and other emergencies.
